"PRAYER CALL"

Urgent United Prayer Meeting For Korean hostages in Afghanistan

In his heart a man plans his course, but the Lord determines his steps. (Proverbs 16:9)

Today, I preached in the Chinese Christian Church of New England which is considered one of the oldest churches in the region back in 1896. As I shared about the burden for revival and awakening in New England, urgent cooperate prayer was suggested for the hostages in Afghanistan. The work of the Lord was amazing that James Baquet, associate pastor of Hope Vineyard Christian Church in San Diego who married a Chinese lady, having the same passion for soul winning in Afghanistan, also shared the same burden about the hostages in Afghanistan. Having been there several times, they are about to leave for Afghanistan this September. During the worship service, Pastor James spoke about Afghanistan and I preached about the revival and awakening. The parallel concerns we shared were in regards to united prayer, mission for the world, and great anticipation for revival in this region.

Having the same burden, Brother Larry Gao and his Chinese congregation proposed prayer meetings in their church from Monday to Friday for the Korean hostages in Afghanistan. This seemed to me a new wave of revival prayer movement. I always imagined the greatest Awakening in the contemporary time as multi-cultural, multi-ethnic, multi-lingual, and multi-nationals rather than homogeneous. After hearing about the Back to Jerusalem movement, these Chinese brethren, while encouraging different groups and leaders, committed themselves to work in a united way of evangelization before the return of the Lord.

The Critical situation of the suffering Korean captives in the hands of Taliban in Afghanistan challenges us set the captives free by prayer and intercession. We need the Lord with His mighty army to show His mercy and grace not only for free the Korean hostages, but also to spread the good news of Jesus Christ for the innocent Afghans. I believe that this incident will not close the open door but open a wider door to further spread the Gospel of Jesus in Afghanistan and the Middle East. As the Song of Songs 8:6 states, “For love is as strong as death,” I believe that the love of Jesus is stronger than death in the world. If the Korean captives lay their precious lives, it is to prepare for the coming revival in Afghanistan; and we, in response, must stand together in united prayer to allow this great commission to bear more fruits.

Leaving behind his mission works in China and India, Charles Studd, as the founder of the World Evangelism Crusade (WEC), left for Africa to bring forth the precious Gospel elsewhere in his very last years. He says, “If Jesus Christ is God and died for me, then no sacrifice can be too great for me to make for Him.” Contrastingly, today, most Christians living in a comfort zone, either intentionally or not, avoid going to risky zones to give their precious life for winning souls for Christ. Charles Studd’s life of taking risks for the kingdom of God serves as an extraordinary trail for us to follow. When his critics told him that he had done enough, he replied when he headed to Africa, "God has called me to go, and I will go. I will blaze the trail though my grave may only become a stepping stone that younger men may follow." I hope that the precious lives of these Korean hostages will produce greater harvest in the land. Let us rise in prayer for the Korean missionaries in Afghanistan. In a critical time as such this, we must cry out to the Lord.
