The murder of the leading candidate for governor of Tamaulipas, a state on Mexico's northern border, has increased fears that cartels will go to any length to influence the upcoming election. This was the highest-ranking political candidate killed since a presidential candidate was gunned down in 1994. The attack has been a big setback for the July 4th elections. A June 29 AP article stated, "Corruption scandals, threats and attacks on politicians have raised fears for months that Mexico's powerful drug cartels are buying off candidates they support and intimidating those they oppose."
Recently the Archdiocese of Mexico said in an editorial that organized crime groups may "try to impose candidates" in the July 4 elections that will decide twelve of Mexico's 31 governorships and that cartels "may also try to impede voters from going to the polls."
Much damage has already been done, but we can pray for safety for the innocent citizens of the twelve states as they go to the polls on Sunday.
Father,
As our hearts are drawn toward Mexico, we pray Your protection and safety for the people in the 12 states that will be holding elections. Please give them wisdom as they vote their consciences. Keep them from evil and harm. We pray also for protection for those who are running for office because they desire to do what is right. Thwart the enemy's plans for Mexico. Expose corruption and lawlessness. Push back the powers of darkness and place people in leadership who will stand for Your righteousness.
Lord, for all of the innocent blood that has been shed on the land, we cry out to You to intervene in Mexico's government. Raise up a standard of righteousness. Draw the people of Mexico to You - be their Strong Tower, their Hiding Place. Show Yourself mighty and strong to the Mexican people. We ask that Jesus be lifted high in Mexico and that You draw all men, women and children to Yourself. Pour Your healing oil on the land of Mexico.
We in the United States reach across the border in our hearts and lift up intercessors and leaders who carry a crushing burden for their nation. May they know they are not alone - for You have many, many in the United States who are concerned about them and their nation.
